16 Helpful Feline Fur Hacks So You Won’t Be Furever Covered in Cat Hair

Fur, it's here, it's there, it's tangled in your hair. When you brought home that fluffy little bundle of joy the last thing you cared to think about was how you were going to get on top of the fur they will leave behind. But sooner or later we all burn out from the endless lint rolling and rounds of laundry. So we enlisted the support and advice of some experienced feline pawrents to shed some light on how to potentially win this fight.

Now, of course such a subject had to be discussed on Reddit's r/Catownerhacks subreddit, a place for feline pawrents to propose the best ways they have discovered to dote on and care for their cats. And considering the commonality of the feline fur problem it was not hard to find some clever and creative solutions that are being used in households around the world. There were of course the traditional options such as vacuuming, or robot vacuuming if you want to be futuristic about it. But then there were several interesting ideas put forth such as food supplements, baths and more.

But I bet you are asking yourself why would there be some many solutions to a problem that feels as though it is rather singular in nature, after all there either is, or isn't fur in your house and on your clothes. But the truth is that there are two main different schools of thinking on this subject, those who deal with the symptom of the fur and those who deal with the root of the issue, the shedding. I myself am not too sure whether it is possible for just one of these schools of thought to be responsible for a singular fix, but a combination of both might do the trick. At the end of the day a cat is going to shed, you might get most of it in a good brushing session but more will always come out. On the other hand vacuuming is helpful but arduous and time consuming. But put together you might just get the best of both worlds.

    leslieknope38 I vacuum daily, have air purifiers that catch some and then also brush my cat daily. Are you brushing regularly? Otherwise, I have just learned to accept my fate. My only regret is getting a light orange kitty when I usually wear a lot of black. Should have color coordinated my cat and wardrobe.

    icheni 2 cats- I have a chomchom roller for all the furniture and fabric things, makes a big difference. Roomba a couple times a week. There's a blanket over the back of the couch so that can be washed. Other than that one of the cats is gray and so we buy gray furniture

  • So other than rolling over and accepting our fate as fur filled people, it is looking like the best option might actually be to be fur filled people who happen to wear the same color clothes as the fur and therefore appear to be furless. And while this solution might be a bit defeatist it is not hard to understand when you know what it is like to live in a land of fur that your cat child has created. My only real problem with this solution is that without meaning to you can end up looking really strange in relation to the rest of society. But that is kind of a minor loss considering the major win of not looking like a crazy cat person who rubs felines on their clothes for fun.

    Deputydea I vacuum my cat weekly and it really helps with all the Siamese glitter. She comes running when I get the vacuum out, and you should how she leans into it. I use the brush attachment so she gets a good brushing at the same time. I know most cats are scared of the vacuum, but see if you can get your cat used to it. I showed her by brushing my arm and she quickly warmed up to it.

    la_anth Maybe look into their diet? A hydrated cat that gets a good balanced diet may not shed as much. I also prefer to wear fabrics that don't attract/hold cat hair, wet my hands and run them through her little body to collect loose hair, and run my air purified 24/7.

    DreamNumber5 My girlfriend bathes her cats but our cats refuse to cooperate with water. We have occasionally taken them to a groomer. Our vet regularly shaves his cats. Lots of vacuuming. We use reusable hair removing tools in the washer and dryer that help pull the hair out of the fabrics. Still cat hair but it helps.

  • Well, it is looking pretty definitive at this point. You are either going to be employing a robot vacuum or vacuuming yourself every day, or simply accepting your fate. And considering the lengths this last pawrent was willing to go to just to keep fur from flying all over the house, I kinda feel like it might actually be worth accepting your fate. Can you imagine how spicy a cat can get when you bathe them, especially if you do it regularly? I think it might be time to accept our fate, and if one of us cat lovers is clever enough, they will open a clothing shop with colors and fabrics that are suitable for cat owners. It would be genius.

    Yingyangwolf95 I just recent figured this out.. Robot vacuum daily in high traffic areas for cat.. Bonus tip: You need to groom cat 2-3 times a week and deshed once a week. Double this if you have a extra furry kitty.

    RoseHawkechik We refer to cat hairs as "extra protein", but really, there's not that much. I have a robo vac that cleans the house on a daily basis, a good filter on the HVAC that really is supposed to be changed monthly anyway, plus a HEPA room filter that I run mostly for the white noise while sleeping. The robo vac was the game changer.

    Little_Internet_5449 Switched to leather furniture as hair does not stick to it, run the vacuum/mop robot daily and use an air purifier. Brush my cats (long hair) twice a week. Vacuum or sticky roll top of beds weekly.
